President Bush is designating three new marine national monuments in the Pacific Ocean that total an area larger than the states of Oregon and Washington combined. The largest of the protected areas surrounds the Northern Mariana Islands and includes the Mariana Trench, the deepest canyon on earth. The Pew Environment Group’s Global Ocean Legacy Program has worked to promote the concept of a large-scale marine reserve in the waters surrounding the Mariana Islands since 2006.
